Located a couple of miles east of the Missouri River and southwest of Mound City Missouri is the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. It's about 90 miles south of Omaha, NE. Various times of the year and depending on the weather patterns many animals and birds can be found here. My wife and I visited today and found Swans, Snow Geese, Bald Eagles, countless ducks and other waterfowl. There were at least 50 eagles that we saw, many more we didn't. There is a fair amount of auto traffic on the auto tour road which keeps the birds at a distance. But quite enjoyable to watch. Eagles seem to enjoy perching on the Muskrat dens, at least I think that is what they are. 40 degrees today and windy. Ice around the edges. The name was changed 2 years ago from Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge. Loess being the soil type of the bluffs in the area.
