    Low Light with the 5D

Nicely done! Were those with a 5D "classic", the first gen camera?

    Say's phoebe

This little fellow (or gal?) showed up working the fenceline of a pasture near Chehalis this afternoon... gray, gloomy day, so the light was less than ideal, but I managed some decent shots of this relatively rare (for the west side) flycatcher... Say's phoebes are normally found east of the...

    Old barn in winter

Don't know - I didn't look. People down here are (rightly so) very protective of their private property, and take a very dim view of strangers poking around. ;)

    Old barn in winter

Went out during the "snow event" for some photos... we only got a fraction of the snow the Puget Sound area god, unfortunately, but I did manage to find this scene about 10 miles west of Chehalis...

    Canvasback duck

I don't think I ever saw one up there either... heard they were around, usually up near Bellingham or the like, or over in eastern WA., but never saw one till I moved down here.

    Canvasback duck

Probably my best shot to date of a canvasback. I've seen them here numerous times, but always so far away as to be useless for a photo. Today, a couple of them came closer, probably within 100 yards, and although I had to shoot between and "focus through" some twigs and branches, I managed a...

    "Snowy" towhee

Nothing rare or exotic this time. just a humble spotted towhee, but set off beautifully by a patch of snow. The bird came out of the thicket in the background, poked around in the snow for a minute, then went back into the brambles. But it gave me some good photo ops from just 20 feet or so...

    Snowy egret

These little guys are pretty rare this far north, so I was kinda pleased to be able to see one... taken down near Vancouver Lake this afternoon. He was about a hundred yards away, and snowies are pretty small as egrets go, so this is a fairly heavy crop...

    Black pheobe

This elegant little fellow perched on a rooftop and offered various poses over a period of about 10 minutes...

A couple of rare visitors to the NW

Unfortunately, no... woulda been nice, though!

A couple of rare visitors to the NW

Both of these birds are very rare west of the Rockies. The first, a Harris's sparrow, lives in central Canada and the central US, breeding in the far north of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories in Canada, and wintering in KS, NE, OK and central TX in the US. The second, a...

Heron with a nice feast (8 images)

This GBH caught itself a nice fat trout in a small lake at a park in Centtralia this afternoon... I was thinking how good that trout would've been pan-fried in garlic butter with a dash of lemon... ;)

    Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge 12-24-2018

Looks like a good day! You and Darren both got some great shots!

    Juvie red-tail

Yeah... I've only managed it a few times. This one's a youngster, though, so it may not yet have learned to be as wary as adults usually are...

    Juvie red-tail

Found this immature red-tailed hawk sitting in a tree yesterday afternoon, and got some nice portraits...He even gave me looks at both sides. He's clearly done this before! ;)

    Tufted Puffins in Washington State?

Not in WA, but there is also a small population that nests every year at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, OR. Your best bet is probably the boat tour of Protection Island, though - better chances of getting closer shots.

Samish Flats and Fir Island 12-03-18

Looks like a pretty interesting day, Bill... some nice shots of the harriers in there!

    White-throated sparrow

    Thanks, Valerie!

    White-breasted nuthatch

Yup... same place where I saw the sandhill cranes... :)
