    Practical application for digiscoping

Digiscoping gave me the extra "reach" this morning to document a Common Loon that was sporting a covering of what appeared to be hydraulic fluid. This is the second one that I've seen in this condition in the past two years, in the same location. I called the Coast Guard who in turn called WDFW...

I'd like to leave you "even more impressed" but it was a museum cruise that I was on, in charge of ID'ing birds we encountered on the bay.

Thanks, Bob. I was on a Whatcom Museum tour of the Bellingham waterfront that evening and both the Hawaiian Chieftain and the Lady Bellingham were on the bay at the time. I think they were engaged in some sort of "mock sea battle" with booming cannons, etc., FWIW.

    Digiscoping practice

I was out on the Semiahmoo Spit on Wednesday, trying to keep my digiscoping edge, leading up to next Saturday's class/workshop at the Puget Sound Bird Fest in Edmonds. I found a few subjects for practice. Hope to meet a few of you in the gym....maybe shoot a few hoops! ;) Juvenile Cooper's...

    Black Turnstones

Black Turnstones continue to get in my way as I try to paddle around the rocks north of Larrabee State Park. This one was just off my bow as I sat in my beached kayak trying to grab a bite of lunch yesterday.

    It's Owl Season..... Again

Back in Whatcom Falls Park this morning, a little farther downstream from the previous shots. Found this Barred Owl cutting into the crayfish population. Typically dark on the creek bottom but we shoot 'em anyway.

    Juvenile Pigeon Guillemot

That's why we keep practicing. ;)

Nice shots! I'm a big fan of Great Blues and I never pass on a chance to spend time with one.

    Juvenile Pigeon Guillemot

I enjoyed spending time with this young PIGU at Semiahmoo yesterday morning. Had to get my feet wet but it was worth it. Lots of diving/foraging in the shallows and then it headed to deeper water for a bit of preening.

    Help with identification, please.

Ospreys are primarily fish eaters and I've seen them take prey from fresh and saltwater. No real need for grebes to worry. Of course, a grebe might think differently.

    Help with identification, please.

That was an easy one. :D

    Black-throated Gray Warbler

There were 6-8 individuals when I found them, mixed in with Black-capped Chickadees, Bushtits, and Bewick's Wrens. They were foraging in a blackberry patch, FWIW. I was also foraging in the same blackberry patch. Good berries!! :)

    Black-throated Gray Warbler

Here's another one of those small, fast-moving birds that I always feel fortunate to catch when they stop. This one is a 1st winter female.

**I made a correction after looking at my files: My photos are of the Hawaiian Chieftain, which is also the first pic in Bill's post, with the Lady Washington being the second.
