The light was not great...
OK, I'll maybe give you that on the first shot. The grey skies probably would have looked better blue.
But on the second shot? I think the light is OK. That same scene would be a real challenge to shoot in bright sun. The trees would have dark shadows and there would be bright highlights on the water. Yes, the shadows would add depth, if you could get the exposure right, but they would create a difficult situation too.
You've got some softer lighting there, which naturally tones down the dynamic range needed to get the shot. It brings out the detail on the bridge, and it's a nice shot in my opinion.
