a molting pied-billed grebe

this grebe hopped up on the beach at Canyon Park and stretched its li'l wings. a friend on another forum tells me this is an adult in molt; it's apparently lost most of its primaries in the transition from breeding plumage to non-breeding, and is waiting for the feathers to grow back in. i'd never seen an adult grebe look like this, so i assumed it was a youngster that had not yet gotten all its flight feathers...

Nice photos Rocky. There is currently a pied-billed grebe sitting on a nest with at least one small chick at Juanita Bay Park, off the main boardwalk looking towards the old road. It seems too far away for decent photos though.
