this little killdeer had just finished splashing about in the shallows at Canyon Park this afternoon, and was presumably shaking the water off its wings... the second shot reminds me of an orchestra conductor... :) 7DII, Tammy at 600mm, 1/2000 @ f/6.3

Good shots. Unfortunately I get rather blase about shooting killdeer as they are present nearly every day at the Edmonds marsh.

agreed! they're all over the place at Canyon Park as well, but this one gave me some nice poses that i just couldn't pass up... ;)

I first learned about Killdeers at my old office. We were out in the gravel work yard, transferring some gear from one truck to another. I'd seen the "Broken Wing" gambit a few times, but this was crazy. The bird did the broken wing, then ran back towards us (suddenly the wing was fine) and did it a few more times. Finally, she went crazy and started dive bombing us! What the... Then we realized there must be a nest nearby. Sure enough, she had four or five eggs laid in the gravel, very hard to see and we'd been walking right past them, making her crazy. We coned off the area and let her hatch them out.

The next year, one nested outside my office window. Watched them sit on the nest in all kinds of weather, including a torrential downpour that had sheets of water running over the ground. She tucked her head under her wing and toughed it out. Finally the babies hatched. Unlike some baby birds, they were fully feathered and ready to run. A few minutes of drying out and the little puffballs were running around following mom. Not gracefully, but they got better quickly. Not sure how long before they were able to fly.
