Agathla Peak, just outside the town of Kayenta, AZ, along highway 163 en route to Monument Valley. Also called "El Capitan" - a name allegedly conferred by frontier scout Kit Carson - and considered a sacred place by the Navajo, Agathla is what remains of a volcanic plug, all that's left of an ancient peak inside which the magma cooled. Over eons, the outer shell of the volcano eroded, leaving the harder rock inside. Today, only this 1,500-foot high tower remains. Canon 40D, Tamron 17-35mm lens at 21mm, 1/100 @ f/11.
