i've always had trouble catching hummers in their natural habitat, unless they're resting on a branch. i managed a couple of shots of this little Anna's female visiting some willow blossoms at the park the other day... 7D, 400mm, 1/3200 @ f/5.6

That looks like a female. Anna's hummers are very territorial. I would go back to that location and try to spot her again in the hope that you can follow her back to a nest.
