Barrow's are pretty common here in winter, but they tend to swim away from the dock/pier/jetty when people approach, and i hadn't managed a really decent shot of one till yesterday. got this little fellow, one of a large flock of Barrow's mixed with surf scoters, from the car deck of the Mukilteo ferry...
something spooked some of them, and off they went!

Good shot of the goldeneye. They are a regular winter visitor to Edmonds, but I haven't seen any here yet. I think they are like the surf scoters: it takes a while for them to become habituated to people to where they won't swim away when approached.

yeah... every time i've seen them, if i tried to get close enough for a really decent shot, they'd swim away. i think these figured the ferry was like a building or something, and they couldn't really see people on the car deck... worked a bit like a 360-foot long, 4300-ton duck blind!
