A unique bird with an unmistakable chatter. Doesn't take to being photographed, for some reason. Great subjects for digiscoping.

Good shots. I think the resident kingfishers at the Edmonds marina have become used to people, as they are not terribly shy. After catching a fish, they will hold it by the tail with their bill and slam it head first on a rock or something metal to kill it before swallowing it.

Nice series, Joe. Kingfishers are tough! Africa is the only place I've been where they're not that shy. Everywhere else it seems they're very difficult to close to without a blind.

this is the only good kingfisher shot i have... would've preferred to get the female, with the rusty "belt", but with these little stinkers, i'll take whatever i can get!! this is the full-frame original, shot at 400mm from about 25 feet away, straight from the camera, just resized for posting... i'd normally crop this a bit for composition before printing.
