spotted these two youngsters up near Salmon La Sac this afternoon... mom was nearby, but these two seemed much more interested in me than she did. they still had a bit of the shaggy winter coat, which is why they look a but disheveled. i was able to get to within 40 feet or so to take this shot. 5D, 24-135 @ 135mm (left the long lens at home, dammit! :mad:), 1/50 @ f/5.6.

I like this shot. One of those "right place - right time" shots. It always seems as though whenever an opportunity like this comes for me, I either don't have my camera or by the time I get it out, the opportunity is gone.

Great shot, and if you ask me, you have exactly the right lens for the job. As others have mentioned, the lighting is excellent on this one and I think you show enough of the background to really establish a sense of place.

Sure, a close shot is always nice, but I think this is an excellent shot too.

thanks, Bob. the only reason i wished for my 100-400 is that it's stabilized, and my 24-135 is not, and i could've shot this without having to sneak up so close...

You definitely do. What's really cool is that you can see the environment, while also getting a sense of subject isolation due to the lighting. They contrast nicely, so they're very easy to see.

What was the lighting on this one? Was it a touch backlit?

Bob, there was a bit of soft backlight from a gap in the trees. made the deer stand out nicely against the green...
