this handsome fellow was roosting on a fence post beside the road on the way back toward Ellensburg last evening... i saw him, slammed on the brakes (no traffic on a dirt back road, so no other cars to worry about... ) and grabbed the camera. didn't want to get out and spook him, so i shot this out the window... got about a dozen photos before he decided it was time to move along...
The light that you have been getting during the golden hour is amazing, day after day. We're getting more and more of it here in the Portland area, aswell.
Since you are so consistent, do you have custom settings, go-to's for aperture, ISO and exposure type platform that you start out with in the field?
thanks, Chad... nothing special, really... the only thing i do that most people might not is set my WB to "cloudy", even on sunny days. that settings tends to "warm" the image a bit, and makes the light during the golden hour just a bit more "golden". other than that, no special settings or anything. mostly, i've just been out a lot in the late afternoon and evening, taking advantage of the glorious weather. this shot, for instance, was taken at about 8PM, when the sun was well down in the sky, and the golden tones of the background (eastern WA sagebrush hills) really add to that overall effect.
Did the quail let out a cry when you were there? It sounds like "Chicago" and resembles more the cry of a tropical bird than something found in the PNW.
I like to use Rocky's "cloudy" white balance trick when photographing in the fall as it gives everything a warmer, more autumn look. Terry, who keeps chastising me for shooting in JPeg, says that all of those white balance settings can be adjusted during post processing when shooting in RAW.

it did, Bill, and i got a shot of it in mid-song... as for the WB settings, while it's true those can be adfjusted in PP, it's easier (for me at least) to change them on the camera than to mess with RAW files, and if push comes to shove, i can also adjust them further in post if necessary.
