there's a house about half a mile from my place that has a bazillion of these gorgeous lilies blooming all along the street edges of the yard... i'd noticed 'em the other day, and made a note to get back there for some pics... 7D, 100-400 @ 285mm, 1/3200 @ f/5.6.

Your 70-200 should be fine for flower shots if the flowers are not far away. It is all about playing with the depth of field.
To get the beautiful solid background like Rocky is getting, try shooting from a tripod in Av mode with the largest aperature opening (lowest "f stop" number) possible, which you have said is f/4.5 for your 70-200L lens. Keep the lens at 200mm and move your tripod to where the flower fills the entire frame and is still in focus.
