took the 5D and the new 24-135 out with me yesterday when my daughter and i went to Camano state park. i felt compelled to take a shot with the replacement lens, just to see how it worked. not much there to shoot, but i kinda liked the way the curve of the shore and the slope of the embankment all sort of converged in the distance... of course, with the dull, gray light and the relatively late hour (taken around 4 PM) for this time of year, it wasn't a really good test - i'll need to get out in better light to be sure, but so far it looks like the replacement lens is pretty comparable to the original.... 24mm, 1/25 @ f/8...

I like it. I noted how the blue sky on the horizon breaks up the darker tones to gives the image a bit of contrast, and gives a already nice photo a little "something something". I think if the gray clouds would have went into infinity it would have taken from this image.
 
I agree with you, the curves make a nice composition. The golden soil adds just enough color.
