Like you, I like to show the environment. An 'art' photo does not relate to the true world that a creature lives in. (If I ever go pro-am, I don't expect to gain much $$$. LOL)
Capturing nature in its 'real' world is why I enjoy my hobby.
(So looking forward to this coming Saturday!)

I feel the cropping is fine. There are times when I prefer to show the bird in its environment rather than just post up a portrait shot.
