Went down to Juanita Bay this afternoon to check on the killdeer nest, and was hugely surprised and thrilled to find they'd just hatched yesterday, and all 4 chicks were foraging with their parents in the area around the nest. I shot over 250 photos! Near the end of the session, a crow tried to snatch one of the chicks, but the parents immediately mobbed the crow as the chicks ran of in 4 different directions. One of them scurried toward where I was standing, and came within 10-12 feet, where I got these shots. Talk about a golden opportunity!!
Actually, this one had just raided a robin's nest and made off with an egg - I couldn't get the lens on it as it flew past in front of me with the egg in its beak, but that would've been a KILLER shot to get! It stashed the egg in some tall grass and covered it with a leaf, and then flew back to try to grab one of the killdeer babies...
