Did I get this one wrong? Surf Scoter.

No wonder it was staying close to the pilings. There must be some good feeding there.

I hope they make their way down so you can get a shot. They are very colorful in their own way.
I tried to do some sharpening in LR5 but I wasn't very satisfied with what happened to the overall image.
I need to get better with the shutter release. Sometimes I press halfway to focus but don't press all the way until I get the focus point in the right position. I need to learn how to follow with the focus point and press halfway and all the way quickly.
Just another part of learning the trade. LOL

That is indeed a make surf scoter. During low tide they will swim under docks to pull out mussels imbedded in the exposed barnacles attached to the support structures.

Nice shot, Deka! I'm keeping my eye out for the surf scoters in northern Oregon, I've never photographed one. Such a colorful bird.
You pointed out that your picture is out of focus, do you do any sharpening in editing? You could probably fix this photo to your hearts content in an editing program.

Out of focus or "soft" focus photos are not always caused by motion when pressing the shutter button. Other causes include shooting at a higher ISO setting than the camera can handle and close cropping a shot taken with a high ISO setting. You might experiment using a tripod + cable shutter release to see if high ISO settings and/or too short a lens for the distance to the subject (which results in close cropping to enlarge the subject) are possibilities.

I have a shutter release so I'm not using the shutter button. I think my problem is the distance of the subject. They are too far away therefor I need to crop dramatically.
I should be more patient.
I use a Manfrotto tripod and head to make sure I have a stable platform for the camera body and Tamron 600MM lens.
ISO for this shot was 250 so it really was a cropping issue. SS was 1250.
