Dusk

So, the past several months one of my biggest subjects has been dusks, especially right now with all of the smoke we have been receiving from the forest fires. What are you seeing? I'm hoping some of you will come through and share some recent images of your sunset/ dusk shots.

Some great vivid colors there. Is that the Tualatin Valley Wildlife Refuge building in the second to last one?

Hello Jeremy. It sure is! In fact, the the top two storm photos were taken at the observation area between the two buildings.

Nice sets, IMO, you seem to have pushed the saturation a little to much.

Here's one I shot last week from 25 miles east of Chinook. We had a lightning strike start a fire the night after this 300 yards from our camp. We bugged out the next morning.

There are two images in particular that were a bit heavy handed in post production, these two..

The rest of the photos have very minimal post production work if any saturation enhancement at all.

Now, the top two storm pictures in the original post are as close to what I saw through my naked eyes that night as I am going to get in the post production. No over saturation here.

I will show you two examples of before and and after edits.

Let's start with the last image in the series. Here's the original, before any sort of editing. Very honest shot, very close to what I was seeing through my eyes without using the camera, very nice, successful shot. Beautiful..

The edit, a bit heavy handed, I'm still favoring. I guess it was the mood I was in that night when I was working on it... A good mood I might add.

I will show a before and after of one more from the set.. One that I get praise for in fact, it has been printed for others a couple of times now and is still a fairly recent shot that I took. I, in particular don't care for it all that much, I don't like the colors. It looks like someone spilled their Micky D's strawberry milkshake across the picture. Also, it seriously looks like major saturation play however, the two files pretty much speak for themselves.

The edit, all I did was tame the picture with some sliders, contrast, gamma and sharpened.

I take it you were pretty minimal on the post production with your shot, shooter?

Yes, Other then it being 8 images.
Shot a vertical pano, bracketing 5 frames 4 times.
I adjusted white balance in the RAW editor of the 4 images for the sky and the 4 images for the foreground. Then boosted the clarity to give it more detail with out pushing the saturation which contrast would do. I then manually blended the sky that was true with the foreground which was true, because the camera couldn't cover the dynamic range. I then created the Pano using PTGui and the 4 blended images to get the final image.
