I have to credit Janine for this thread. Thursday (2/20) she talked Daren and me into walking north around the marina breakwater to look for Harlequin ducks after the tide went out. We were later joined by Terry. We found the ducks, but the big action (quite literally) was a sea lion north of us feeding on salmon. I had the 7D + 2.8/400L + 2x teleconverter mounted on a tripod for the 35mm equivalent of a 1251mm telephoto lens. I knew shots with the 2x teleconverter would not be as clear as those taken with the 1.4x teleconverter, but I wanted to try anyway just to see the difference.

The sea lion's actions attracted the usual gulls trying to scavange leftovers.

But an eagle surprised us when it flew in.

After the sea lion dived down to get fish, we tried to track its location and predict where it would emerge by following the gulls. We saw a pattern of the sea lion biting off the salmon's head, then swallowing the body with the tail going down last.

The gulls were annoying the sea lion as it would make several lunges at them between dives.

The sea lion's technique of decapitating the salmon,

then tossing the body out.

The sea lion had to retrieve the rest of the salmon before the gulls did.

After biting off a salmon's head, the sea lion would swallow it whole, much like a cormorant does.

pretty cool stuff, Bill! even with the IQ loss from the 2x and (i expect) some serious cropping, these are quite good "behavior" shots. i bet that was something to watch!

I agree with Rocky, Bill....great behavior sequence. We have some similar shots, but yours is far more complete.
BTW, the resolution is very similar to what I got with the 500f4L and the 1.4x (7D).

Man, there's a lot of nice shots here!

I am very fortunate to photograph wildlife action that is just a 5-10 minute drive from my home in a heavily (over?) populated urban environment. I would not be able to do so if not for the Port of Edmonds and the City of Edmonds' Parks & Recreation Department, both of which have created and maintain parks and wildlife protection zones.

Amen, Bill. That goes for me too :)

Pretty cool shots. Won't be long and we should be seeing them on the Willamette River.
