Terry, Daren, and I went up to Eide Rd. Wednesday to look for Rocky's short-eared owls. First we took a tour of Fir Island, where we saw several eagles, swans, and flocks of snow geese.

One large flock off Fir Island Rd., panning left to right.

From Fir Island we went to the Stanwood Cafe for lunch. It is a popular spot with the locals and they serve breakfast all day.

After lunch we drove out to Eide Road. An eagle was perched in the tree by the dirt turnout before you reach the parking lot.

The eagle took off and made a low pass over the parking lot while we were setting up our equipment.

We walked down the road past the barrier and porta-potty. Looking through the 500L + 1.4x TC, I could see a harrier huddled down in the field a long way off.

The harrier was one of two females that patrolled the area.

No short-eared owls or shore birds were present. Terry blamed the wind for the no-show shorties.

The two female harriers provided the only action. They provided good practice for photographing birds in flight with long telephoto lenses.

A few green-winged teals were floating in the ponds, but I can photograph them at the marsh.

Nice recap, Bill! Too bad we didn't see any short-eared owls - but that's not really a surprise considering the wind. Nice trip, though.
