this little Anna's hummingbird appeared to get into a dispute over a sap well with what looks like a bald-faced hornet... i think they declared a draw, as both of them retreated and went their separate ways...

Good shot. I have seen similar face offs at my hummer feeders, but never in the wild. Interesting relationship between three species, as I assume the sap wells were made by a woodpecker.
 
thanks, Bill! i don't know if it was a woodpecker or not... looks like something larger did some damage... the sap is running down the trunk. that large white gooey mass on the lower right.
 


The fractures in the tree bark could be from extra fast growth of the secondary layer in the tree. (Wet winter and spring)
The bark layer could not keep up with the growth expansion and split the bark layer which lead to the seeping of the sap.
No matter how the sap got to the surface, it is still a great shot.
