went down to Juanita this afternoon, found it pretty quiet. the only obvious target was this great blue heron about 30 feet away, who posed quite nicely for me... 7D, 100-400 @ various focal lengths, f/7.1, auto shutter...

pssst! wanna buy a watch?? actually, this is how herons cool off... he was panting, and had his wings partly spread to get as much cooling as possible from the slight breeze...

Good shots. Those light colored feathers make herons are harder to photograph than you might think in bright sunshine.

Reminds me of the Green Heron I saw in Portland yesterday. 15+ degree difference from the day before making Tuesday the hottest day of the year sitting at around 99 degrees. The lighting sucks compared to your photos but this GH was taking in the brunt of the swelter.

thanks, Chad... yeah, the drama with my 5D2 sucks, but at least i'm not high and dry... my trusty 7D still works just fine!
