Is that a muskrat or a nutria? I have seen many nutria at Ridgefield.

Things have been really dead up here for the past week, so I'm glad to see your photo from Ridgefield. I hope more members from PDX will post up photos from Ridgefield and Tualatin NWR's.

Bill, you ask a really good question!
Not sure if I have ever seen a nutria so I'm not sure.
I did see the rodent out of the water (no picture though) and it had a low profile.
My research tells me that the muskrat and nutria are about the same size? It could be a nutria.

Here are some photos I took of nutria at Ridgefield on 9-10-12. One year JaniceL and I both photographed an albino or leucistic nutira there.

OK - since I did not see the front/face of the rodent, I'll be changing the original post to state muskrat or nutria.
If Ridgefield NWR has more nutria than muskrats, those in the know should be able to make their own decision.

I hope you post up some more photos of Ridgefield. Things are really dead up here until the winter migrants arrive.

I forgot to mention that is a good shot of the egret. I understand they are not a regular visitor to Ridgefield.
 
I wish I lived closer to Ridgefield!
I was on a business trip and took the time to do the loop on Monday on my way to Portland.
I saw around 20 egrets in various locations. It was about 5:00 pm when I got there.
When I left Portland to come home on Tuesday , I did the loop again and only saw 1 (got there around 3:45 pm).
Ridgefield is having a Birdfest the first weekend of October. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend.
I hope to make more trips south to investigate Ridgefield this fall.
It's a pretty cool place. Next time I'll have the Tamron 150-600 mm with me.
