Got this shot of a great blue heron catching a vole in the meadow up at Eide Road this afternoon... first time I've actually been able to photograph a GBH catching something that wasn't aquatic. Oddly enough, the bird dropped the vole, looked at it a couple of times, and then wandered off. Perhaps its eyes were bigger than its stomach?

Maybe it left the vole for you as a gift. Herons are rodent hunters. Terry and I photographed one catching and eating rodents at the retention pond at the end of the Pt. Edwards walkway.

Yeah, they'll eat anything they can get down their gullet. I've seen 'em eat snakes, and I know they eat all sorts of other stuff...
