In the right place at the right time this morning to watch this Great Blue Heron subdue this struggling lamprey at the mouth of Whatcom Creek. The lamprey was all of 2 feet long!
This was something I've never seen before.
wow... never seen that either, Joe! right place/right time that big lamprey came out of that tiny little stream?? looks like it's in the intertidal zone, from all the seaweedy-lookin' stuff on the ground...
Good catch, for you and the heron. I sent a link to this thread to Chris Anderson of DFW. Chris is an authority on great blue herons. I'll pass along any insights he may offer.
Yes, this was in the intertidal zone at the mouth of Whatcom Creek and the heron did in fact swallow the lamprey whole. Always impressed by the things they can wolf down....and get right back to it.
