this little green heron was just kinda chillin' by the edge of the marsh at Canyon Park this afternoon, not doing much, but i couldn't resist a couple of shots... i expect in another couple of weeks, these little fellas will be gone, so i'm getting shots while i can!
i looked for the bittern again while i was there, but no sign... if it's still around, it kept well out of sight...
I was there today seen green and bittern no good shots

you saw the bittern? where was it? was there from about 3:30-6:30, looked all over for it.

I'll do some research on the migration habits (if any) of the green heron.
Birds of the Puget Sound reports that green heron numbers in the PNW are increasing while the bittern is declining. The range map of the green heron in my (now older) edition of Sibley's shows just isolated sightings in the PNW. Photos and reports on this site demonstrate that it is now a regular inhabitant in the Seattle area and nests here.

i know there was a nesting pair at Canyon Park this year... never found the nest, but there were clearly both adults and juvies there. i don't know if they actually migrate or not, but they do tend to disappear in fall and reappear again in late spring. there was one year (2007 i think) when they were all over the place at Juanita, then they seemed to vanish, and i hardly ever saw them except occasionally at a distance. didn't get any decent shots of one again till this year.
I was there about 1;00 same area farther back.

i may head down there again on Saturday and see if i can spot it and get some more shots...
Gorgeous photos, Rocky! I've only been twice, both times early in the season. Looks like I may have to go there before the end of summer!
