these little fellas seem more common around here in winter... this one came out and posed for me at the park yesterday... 7D, 100-400 @ 400mm, 1/1600 @ f/8, -1EV

Nice shots. They can blend in quite well with their surroundings as long as they don't move. I surprised one this morning while I was touring the Edmonds marsh. I'll post photos in a new thread I have planned.

During our last real cold snap three years ago, I noticed a lot of them appeared in residential yards as the ponds and marshes where they normally hang out were frozen over.

thanks, Bill... they can be hard to spot, for sure. i've had my best luck with these little guys at Juanita Bay Park in Kirkland, where these shots were taken.
