"are you so practiced at it you just walk up and go "Looks like right about... here... should get the shot I want"?
i wish! no, i'm not that good... yet! but i'm working on it! how many of my shots "work"? probably 10%, maybe a bit more. i may go out and shoot 100 frames of 10 or 12 different subjects or scenes, and i usually get 1 or 2 "keepers" of each. not to say the rest are bad, just that i don't like them as well, so they don't get processed. usually it's because there's something about the composition i don't quite like, maybe one focal length works better than another, or the framing on one is just slightly better. the 5D has a relatively small, low-res screen, and the coverage is only 95%, so i don't always get things placed in the frame exactly where i want them. sometimes the exposure isn't exactly what i wanted, or maybe it just doesn't look quite as impressive on the monitor as it did in person. i rarely take the same shot twice, but i might shoot a several at different focal lengths, different perspectives or viewing angles, and different camera settings. then when i get home, i pick the one(s) i like the best to process.
for this shot, i probably took 15-20 shots total at the lake, of different parts of the shoreline, at different focal lengths, some portrait and some landscape, etc. i shot this particular spot twice... one vertical and one horizontal. liked the horizontal format best...
