Went back to Juanita Bay again this morning, to get the merlin in some better light (i.e. not backlit), and it more than cooperated... the first one will likely be in my bird calendar next year.

What a nice close encounter. Looks like we have some living in my neighborhood. The trees may be a bit too tall here for close-ups. ;)

Thanks, Max! This is the closest I've been able to get to one... it doesn't seem at all concerned with people on the viewing platform just 50-60 feet away - it perches in that tree no matter how many people are there. These shots make a nice addition to my portfolio, though... prior to this, my only merlin shots were from 50 yards or more, usually high up in a tree...
