stopped off at Pine Ridge with a friend this afternoon to see if we could spot the owl or the pileated woodpeckers. heard the owl(s), but never saw any, and i was actually about to call it a day and go elsewhere, when we heard this fellow working on a tree... he was quite engrossed in his work, and didn't seem particularly concerned as i got within 30 feet or so and started shooting. even the flash didn't seem to faze him...

this shot was taken with ambient light, 325mm, 1/50 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 3200. the 7DII seems to be pretty good at this ISO setting.. a bit of noise, but very manageable.

used the flash for this one, 250mm, 1/250, f/5.6 @ ISO 3200...

pretty much... he was about 30 feet back from the road, directly across from the retention pond. and about 8 feet off the ground. the female was in the area as well, and i saw her a couple of times, but wasn't able to get any shots of her.
