We spent 8 days (Dec 1 through 9, 2013) in Wailea, Maui - the highlights for me were the various birds there, many of which have been introduced. A few, like the Iiwi, Apahane, and Black-necked Stilts are natives there. To start with, I have selected the red birds, since they are so spectacular. I'll post more shots if there is interest.

This is the Apahane - a native bird that resides on the high slopes of Mt. Haleakala at about elevation 7,000 feet (the top of Haleakala is 10,023 feet)

Another Apahane - we found them on a short hike out of Hosmer Grove, just inside the entrance to the National Park.

This is the Iiwi, that also lives at fairly high elevations along with the Apahane.
Both are Honey Creepers.

These Cardinals posed for me just off our lanai at Wailea

More colorful birds of Maui

Just for you Bill :)

This Japanese White Eye perched near our lanai - the background is palm tree fronds. The White eye was introduced to Maui in the 1930s

So did this female Cardinal. Although common, it was a treat for us Washingtonians to see. BTW these were introduced in late 1920s from North America

This Nutmeg Mannikin was a new one for me. Introduced in Maui in the mid-1860s from SE Asia

The Common Myna was the golf course guard. Introduced from India in 1865.

Good photos, but I'm sure you are happy to get back to our drab weather and drab birds.
