Return of the male Rufous hummers

Its exciting to see them return - what an elegant tiny, but fierce, bird. I hope to get more shots soon!

So, today was a hummer kind of day

- I still didn't get the in-flight that I wanted, but it was nice of the female Rufous to visit. We did have a bit, well quite a bit of competition between the rufous and annas'.

As Bill Anderson would tell you, I don't like feeder shots with the feeder showing, but he told me to "get over it" - so I did
All taken with the Canon 7D and 500mm f4L. Nice to have the f4 for such a dark day, but that limited dof makes it challenging to get sharp shots.

It was great that the female showed up.






I think we actually have two males - one with quite a bit more green spots than the other






And the male Annas was holding his own against those feisty Rufous

Thanks, Bill. Our hummer traffic is really heavy right now - I have to fill the two feeders every two days. Way more often than usual.

Have you ever heard Rufous hummers fly?
They have a very distinctive sound. Kind of like crickets sound but very fast.

Yes, I have Deka - amazing birds! I understand they make that sound with their wings during their 'J' dives. And thanks!
