Good shots, Deka. I'm kinda thinking the grebe is an immature bird, rather than an adult in winter plumage. Their actual plumage doesn't look all that different between summer and winter, but in winter, the dark band around their beaks fades. Also, the adult's beaks are pretty much solid pale gray or off-white. This one's beak has no trace of a band, and still seems to have a bit of the appearance of a juvenile grebe. Besides, the adults should still be in their summer garb... all the grebes I've seen recently have still had the very prominent, contrasting dark band on their beaks.

The one below is a juvenile, only about 7 weeks old... hatched right at the end of July. That's pretty late for grebes, which normally hatch in mid-May to late June, so yours might just be a month or so older than this one... The main thing is. compare the beaks... yours still has some of the color and pattern of the immature birds...
