These are really beautiful shots Rocky. It was nice seeing you on Sunday and thanks for getting ID on the birds we saw.

I never tire of watching the shorties on patrol. The trick is to snap a photo at that precise moment when they are staring at you as they make a turn. Easier said than done. ;)

I believe they are the only owls that are regular day time hunters. It is really fun when two shorties or a shorty and a harrier are on patrol and their flight paths overlap. There is usually a brief skirmish over airspace before they resume their circling.

i think you're right about the daytime hunting, though snowies may do that as well. getting that shot of them looking at you as they turn isn't easy... they're often looking at the ground for prey rather than at the camera... i've gotten a few shots like that, but more by accident than by design. the skirmishes are fun to watch as well...
