the most thorough reviews i've read of both lenses (by the same person) gave the edge to Sigma, but so small an advantage as to be meaningless in the real world. he seemed mostly impressed by Sigma's build quality (though it's 2 lbs heavier than the already somewhat hefty Tamron, which makes it far less versatile for hand-held shooting), but since Tamron offers a 6-year warranty on theirs (which i don't think Sigma can match), i'm guessing they aren't worried about build quality. i'm certainly not concerned about the fact the Tammy is made mostly of plastic... so are Glocks, and they seem to hold up just fine!
as far as optical performance, my Tamron is a significant step up in sharpness and clarity from my 100-400L (first gen), and from the images i've seen, compares very favorably to even the new 100-400L. not quite as sharp as the "big whites", but again, as a practical matter, the difference is really inconsequential. i may have a "good copy", but i'm VERY happy with mine... my keeper rate went through the roof when i got it, especially on the 7DII. the only place i see the Tamron giving away anything is at extreme range and max zoom - it has a little difficulty getting a sharp focus, and the images overall are a bit soft. then again, ALL zoom telephotos suffer from that problem to some degree.
