Nope, just a bad ID. If you don't look closely at the photos, you don't notice how much bigger they are. Did notice he didn't have as much red but thought maybe they did the goldfinch trick and turned dull in winter.

If you have occasion to spend time with/around pileateds, you'll never miss the ID. For starters, they're huge!
