Good shot. They usually like to keep their distance from people.
Every winter I see a pied-billed grebe in the Edmonds marina. Unlike the horned grebes, which will swim directly under the walkway out to the fishing pier or very close to the breakwater, the pied-billed grebes will stay as away from the walkways as they can.
nice catch, Deka! pied-bills are indeed shy little fellows... generally, it's tough to get within 25 yards of one, i've gotten shots at Juanita from as close as 25-30 feet, but those are relatively few and far between. they're voracious fishers, though... i once watched on catch and eat 5 sticklebacks in the span of about 20 minutes!

It looks like this was indeed a lucky catch!
The little pond where I found the family is usually occupied by mallard ducks.
I was amazed that there were young ones on the pond. Mom stayed very close to them and they stayed close to the water lilies.
I thought it was kind of late in the year to have young ones that are not ready to fly. I got shots but I haven't processed them yet.
Not sure how long the family will be in the pond but I'll go back this weekend to see if they are still there.
