this red wolf was clearly the alpha of the group... he wasn't pleased when one of the others tried to approach, and he made no bones about showing it! taken at the Point Defiance zoo in Tacoma, WA. the red wolf, originally native to the southeastern US, was declared extinct in the wild in 1980, and the Point Defiance Zoo has been breeding them and slowly reintroducing them to the wild since the early 1990s. it is estimated that there are still only about 300 red wolves remaining in the world, and slightly more than 200 of those are in captivity. the zoo's "species restoration" project has a ways to go... shot through glass at a distance of about 30 feet. 5D2, 24-105 @ 105mm, 1/250 @ f/8, ISO 1600
They took away the wolf exhibit at the Oregon Zoo awhile back, perhaps to make way for some of the remodeling they are doing. I don't think they had red wolves. It would be nice to see the zoo bring back a wolf exhibit and have some red wolves hanging around for "species restoration".
thanks, Chad! there are several wolf exhibits here in Washington... Woodland Park in Seattle, of course, and the red wolves at Point Defiance, but there's also a wolf exhibit at NW Trek near Eatonville, and Wolfhaven near Tenino. i think i'll need to visit Wolfhaven next spring... haven't been in years, since well before i got decent camera gear!
