Well, Bill, it won't be long before those woodpeckers will be able to join you inside your house :)

Nice shots!

Wednesday (9/3) a small flock of band-tailed pigeons flew through my neighborhood.

Western and least sandpipers continue to show up at the marsh.

Something scared up a mixed flock of killdeer and sandpipers.

Thursday morning (9/11/14) I set up my super telephoto combo of my 5DIII + 500L + 2x teleconverter on Sunset Ave. Terry later joined me to continue our tradition of taking identical shots.

A small flock of mergansers flew by prior to Terry's arrival. I was suprised I could track them as well as I did with the super telephoto combo and its narrow field of view.

A flock of Canada geese landed in the Sound.

The one that got away: A crow scared up a Cooper's hawk which had been lurking below us in the bushes which line the bluff next to the railroad tracks. The hawk flew past us too close and too fast to get any photos.

That afternoon I went to the marsh, where I photographed a black-capped chickadee digging for larvae in a cattail head. Taken handheld with my 5DIII + 100-400L telephoto zoom + 1.4x teleconverter.

The shots were tricky due to back lighting and the chickadee being low in the cattails. I like using the autumn and winter back lighting to highlight the cattail fuzz.

Saturday (9/13) I went to the fishing pier to photograph Heermann's gulls flying between the marina and Shell Creek spit.

Nothing really going on at the marsh except another backlit, black-capped chickadee digging for larvae in the cattail heads.

Monday afternoon (9/15), Janine, my son Daren, and I came across a covey of quail at the Wildlife Garden located on the fish hatchery grounds.
01.JPG

The covey wanted to cross Pine St., but rush hour traffic kept scaring them back into the garden. The alpha male served as the scout.

After several false starts, the covey finally made it across Pine St.

Wednesday (9/17) I spotted a pied-billed grebe still in summer plumage below Sunset Ave. Hopefully this heralds the arrival of the winter migrants.

After watching the Seahawks beat the Broncos Sunday (9/21) afternoon, my son and I went to the marsh to watch birds of the non gridiron variety enjoying the last day of summer.

The sun was getting low, so I used negative exposure compensation to keep from blowing out the herons' white feathers when shooting them from the #1 viewing platform.

A flock of about a dozen killdeer swarmed over the marsh while we were at the #3 platform, which faces the late afternoon sun.

Tuesday (9/23) my son and I met Terry at the coffee shop at the marina near the fishing pier. It was raining off and on, but I did get some shots of the resident female kingfisher. I have heard that kingfishers are very shy and skittish, but I think the ones which reside at the marina have developed a fair tolerance of human activity.

After checking out the marsh, my son and I drove up Pine St. on Pt. Edwards to look for the Cooper's hawk. It was using the light posts as perches from which to hunt the hillside below.

I spent about a half hour photographing it flying to and from the light posts along Pine St. It is not shy and will land on a nearby light post and fly fairly close when swooping down. I just hope it does not fly in front of a car and get hit.

I especially like the cooper's shots, Bill!

Here's one I took with the Canon 40D and 400 f5.6 from a different angle. Wish I had had the brains to lower the ISO (800)....Just wait until I get my hands on the 7D mark ii :) I had to use a little Neat Image NR to reduce the noise - and it still looks noisy :(
