I'd like to start a Woodpecker thread this morning and lead off with the big boy.

Pileated Woodpecker

I'm always impressed with how big these guys are. :D

This member of the woodpecker family is one that's found more often on the east side of the Cascades.

Williamson's Sapsucker, male

This particular bird and his mate were feeding young in a nest at the Klipchuck Campground, just over the Cascade Crest, off Hwy. 20, west of Winthrop.

Great catches of both. Still trying to get a decent Pileated and I've yet to see a Williamson's.

Good shots. Terry and I have our favorite spots in Edmonds where we look for our local Big 4: the downy, hairy, pileated, and red-breasted sapsucker.

I don't include flickers, as they frequent my back yard feeder year around. Every spring they pound on my gutters and try to burrow through the eaves of my house into the crawl space.

I'm a big flicker fan, and I've never met one I didn't like. It seems they always have something to offer, even if the lighting isn't so hot. ;)

Very Nice Joe... i havent seen to many around my neck of the woods... Use to get some Flickers...

Go to your local farm store and buy woodpecker suet. It's specially blended to attract them, and it really works. I put some on a tree in my yard, and I see woodpeckers there on a regular basis. They will eat the other types of suet as well, but they really love the woodpecker blend.

Keep in mind that it may well take a while before one happens by and finds it, but once they know it's around they should become regulars.
