Flickers like to eat ants, which is why you may see them on the ground.

When you are photographing flickers, look for a red chevron on the back of the neck (nape) . The presence of one means that bird is a red-shafted/yellow-shafted intergrade, sometimes called a "hybrid." I have photographed several such birds in my area......... or photographed the same bird several times.
