Went out to Bottle Beach near Westport yesterday to see if I could get some decent shots of shorebirds for a change. The tide was way out, so I walked out onto the tide flats and set up my tripod and just waited. As the tide came in, so did the birds, and before long I had them all around me.. Had dunlin almost literally at my feet, and some of the others not much farther away. Here's a sampling of what I got...
Red knot, a "lifer" bird for me... this one was no more than about 40 feet away...
Ruddy turnstone... have seen and photographed these before, but they were badly backlit and at a distance, not 50-60 feet away like this little guy....
Dunlin in breeding plumage, This image is uncropped, from about 12 feet away.
