Chinese Elm Penjing

Part of the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection.

Quoting from the description on the display:

This shore scene, or land and water penjing, was created at the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection in 1993 by Yangzhou artist Quingquan Zhao.

Mr Zhao used field grown Chinese elms between 5 and 10 years old to create the tree grove, then cemented specially selected rocks into place to create the shore line. The rocks are a type of weathered Chinese limestone called "turtle back stone"

The artist is production manager at the Yangzhou Penjing and Botanic Gardens, serves as vice-chairmen of the All-China Penjing Artists Association, and has published books on penjing in both Chinese and English. He is also a popular teacher who frequently travels to the United States and other countries to demonstrate his art.
