    Great Blue snags a lamprey

    In the right place at the right time this morning to watch this Great Blue Heron subdue this struggling lamprey at the mouth of Whatcom Creek. The lamprey was all of 2 feet long! This was something I've never seen before. *I took about 50 shots for documentation. :cool:

    Bonaparte's Gull

    This is one of my favorite gulls and I always look forward to their spring migration through the county. Great little flyers and quite entertaining. Good numbers now at Blaine, Birch Bay, and Semiahmoo.

    Good numbers of LTDUs in breeding plumage at Semiahmoo these days. Here's a male and female for your viewing pleasure. *This was taken a couple of hours before the wind came up and I rolled my kayak while focusing on a great Bald Eagle shot! Another day at the office. Nikon might be dead.

    The bonus for getting to the pond early, this male Virginia Rail calling for his mate. The light was not that great but I'm always happy to get a look at these very secretive marsh birds.

    Nice shot, love the colors! And not to get all picky and everything, but those are swans in the background, most likely trumpeters. :)

    The heronry in south Bellingham is in full operation these days with at least a dozen nests hosting pairs of parents-to-be. Constant 'remodeling' continues.

    Oyster Catchers at Deception Pass State Park

    We camped there last October and that part of West Beach is a great spot for oystercatchers and good numbers of Heermann's Gulls during migration. Good stuff. :D *Of course, if the Navy is practicing touch and go..... :(

    I monitored four nests last year, via kayak, so the numbers are building up here. The most accessible site is near Larrabee State Park and the same pair is back again, staking out the site. Adult BLOY with 5-week-old chick

    I did a presentation on Camano Island last night and found myself at the end of Eide Road just after 5 PM, with a little time to spare....so let's see if I can find that LEOW. *Digiscoped to give the owl some room.

    Rainy and gray at Crockett Lake on Thursday where I found this Short-eared Owl and two of his buddies. *Also, numerous harriers and a Great Horned pair calling behind the lighthouse at Fort Casey.
